Sussex Chicken History
The Sussex originated in Sussex UK. These hens were prized table birds more than 100 years ago. The original colours were red, brown and speckled.
Sussex chickens today are one of the most popular breeds to keep. They were originally bred to be a dual-purpose bird but most people today keep them for their excellent eggs laying.
They are one of the most productive breeds out there today. The hen will lay around 210 maybe more of medium to large size egg that is cream to light brown in colour.
The Sussex is one of the oldest breeds of chicken that is still in existence today.
Sussex Behaviour
The Sussex is an alert but docile breed that can adapt to any surrounding easily. They are very good foragers and are quite happy to be free-range. They will do fine if kept in a coop but as they are large, a little extra room and they will flourish. They do occasionally but not very often go broody.
The Speckled Sussex is the most likely of them to go breed to do this.
Sussex Colour Varieties
The Sussex breed of chickens is brown buff, light red, speckled, silver, and white. The Sussex chicken whatever its colour should be graceful and very aware.
The eyes are red in the darker varieties but are orange in the lighter ones. They have a medium-sized single comb. The earlobes are red and the legs and skin are white in every variety.
Sussex Rarer Colours
The brown and red varieties are rarer now with the other colours being quite common.

We also have our own delivery service for eggs, chicks & hens throughout the North East for a small fee of £10 no matter how much you purchase.

All our stock is updated online daily. If you order online your hens will be reserved for you to collect at a time that suits you.
As we update our website daily with our stock. We cannot guarantee if you turn up at our farm without reserving and paying for your hen first. That the breed you are looking to acquire will be available.
